Asked by William King

Alright, I have been having sound issues with my 1.5 year old laptop that was just converted from windows to Ubuntu 11.04 linux. I have confirmed that all the speakers work correctly(for left/right channels) and that the hardware detection of the headphones works in Windows(this is not a slight against ALSA, just confirmation that the hardware is good). In linux when the headphones are connected there is no sound out of them, and the speakers keep playing like normal.

I'm not sure how to diagnose the issue so if there is a walkthrough, or a series of steps that would help please send me a link.

Here is the alsa info link: http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=cc3527ed4b64af2a4b451e6bee689bf42d808674

I have followed https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure with no solution so far.

Thanks. One thing I noticed was that the driver and library versions are not the same:
!!ALSA Version
!!------------

Driver version: 1.0.23
Library version: 1.0.24.1
Utilities version: 1.0.24.2

Would this cause problems, and if so is there a way to resolve this?

Try adding:

options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1

to

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Reboot to test

I added the line you suggested and now the headphones detection works,
but the audio does not after headphones are detected. Sound was working
out the speakers, plugged in the headphones, the speakers were muted,
and the sound from the onboard microphone was being piped into the
headphones. There was no sound other than the mic being sent to the
headphones.

ok try:

options snd-hda-intel model=laptop position_fix=1

May help

Now when I plug the head phones in it mutes all audio. Unmuting the
audio will now have audio playing out both the headphones and the speakers.

Seems like it is getting closer, but still not working as intended.

Try:

options snd-hda-intel model=asus position_fix=1

Also try without the position fix bit

I tried the model=asus with and without the position_fix=1 and neither
are any difference from model=laptop. Thanks for the help so far, any
more ideas?

Look online for other options for your particular model.

I just went and retested everything and it seems that after running:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y --reinstall install alsa-base
alsa-utils; killall pulseaudio; rm -r ~/.pulse*

Then any of the 5 combinations of:
options snd-hda-intel model=laptop position_fix=1
options snd-hda-intel model=laptop
options snd-hda-intel model=asus position_fix=1
options snd-hda-intel model=asus
options snd-hda-intel

at the bottom of the alsa-base.conf file have no effect. I can even
remove the line and they all respond the same way. Audio through the
speakers works, detects the headset being plugged in, mutes the volume,
and when unmuted plays sound through both headset and speakers.

I'm testing more options.

Resolved now. Thanks to all those that helped along the way. The final fix was spelled out here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules

On irc in the channel #alsa dtchen mentioned that the VIA codecs have been significantly recently.

Fixed in these packages:

ii alsa-base 1.0.24+dfsg-0ubuntu1 ALSA driver configuration files
ii alsa-utils 1.0.24.2-0ubuntu6 Utilities for configuring and using ALSA
ii bluez-alsa 4.91-0ubuntu1 Bluetooth ALSA support

ii gstreamer0.10-alsa 0.10.32-1ubuntu5 GStreamer plugin for ALSA
ii linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.38-10-generic 2.6.38-10.201107131605 Ubuntu-supplied Linux modules for version 2.6.38-10-generic ALSA snapshots
