Do I need to C:> to fix iTunes?

Asked by PhoenixSteel

Having installed Wine, I successfully downloaded and installed iTunes on the latest version of Ubuntu. However, upon running the music program, I'm shown the error message "Windows System component that iTunes requires are missing or corrupted." Below that the error message states it is possible to communicate with iTunes/the iPhone and gives a button for more information. Upon selecting "More Information" I'm taken to an iTunes website where I am given instructions on how to fix the problem. It gives a step-by-step solution, which I'll paste below:
Solution

This symptom may be caused by an issue with the digital signing of Windows XP drivers. Following the steps below to reregister several .dll files may resolve this issue.

   1. Quit iTunes.
   2. Highlight all of the following 10 lines of text that begin with regsvr32 and then choose Copy from the Edit menu of your web browser:

      regsvr32 /s softpub.dll
      regsvr32 /s wintrust.dll
      regsvr32 /s dssenh.dll
      regsvr32 /s rsaenh.dll
      regsvr32 /s gpkcsp.dll
      regsvr32 /s sccbase.dll
      regsvr32 /s slbcsp.dll
      regsvr32 /s mssip32.dll
      regsvr32 /s cryptdlg.dll
      regsvr32 /s initpki.dll
   3. Open the Notepad program by choosing
Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad
   4. In Notepad, choose Paste from the Edit menu. Note: make sure that the text that appears in Notepad is the same as what is shown above.
   5. From the File menu, choose Save As.
   6. In the File name field type appleitunes.bat and save the file to the Desktop.
   7. Close Notepad and locate the appleitunes.bat file. It should appear on the Desktop with the icon shown below:
[shows gear/cog icon]
   8. Double-click the file and you will see a black window appear on the screen for about a minute. Wait until the window automatically disappears and proceed to the next step.
   9. The appleitunes.bat file can be deleted at this time.
  10. Open iTunes.

Everything works fine right up to Step 7. The file saves to the Desktop just fine, however it does not appear as the gear/cog icon, but rather as a text icon. When I double click on it, a message pops up stating that the file is in fact an "executable text file," giving me the option of running it in Terminal, displaying it, canceling, or just running the file. Displaying, canceling and running do nothing. Running the program in Terminal displays the white Terminal window for a few seconds without any code appearing in the field, then quickly closes itself. I had hoped this would have the effect the iTunes website intended, but upon opening iTunes again the same error message appeared.
My thinking is that I would need the C:> program (the 'black window' mentioned above in Solution) to make the process work completely. Is there a way to download the C prompt program via Wine, or should I just give up on making iTunes work?

Several other programs are available to use your iPod with Ubuntu such as Rythmbox, Gtkpod, all of which can be found in synaptic. I've tried to get itunes to run with wine a few times with little luck myself, I ended up using Rythmbox.

Can you help with this problem?
