DNS resolution issues

Asked by Martin John

Hi, I have a new installation of Ubuntu Server 7.10 I am having issues with DNS resolution, for some strange reason my resolve.conf file keeps reverting to a 192.168.1.x address the server is on a public static IP and I configured the interface using ifconfig eth0 etc.
If i edit the reolv.conf file and insert a valid DNS server then all is ok untril the system decides to revert it!

Appreciate any and all pointers on this.

DOPE! why do you always get a flash of inspiration as soon as you have asked for help! I found that whilst I have set a static IP address (or so I think) there is a DHCP server running on the ADSL router and the DNS was left as the default 192 etc.

Yes you have to edit the /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf and add prepends to the DNS you require :)
