Ubuntu desktop blackscreen

Asked by Rob Annandale

I run Ubuntu 11.04 on a Dell OptiPlex 755 workstation.

My problem is that occasionally and for no apparent reason my screen will not redraw after it has been locked or the screensaver has kicked in.

I do not see the unlock dialogue, but I do see the mouse cursor, however nothing else. I can switch to any of the other console
terminals using ctrl-alt-f[1-6] and do see the login prompt. My system does not hang, but the GUI session simply blanks and I am forced to restart my machine to resuse the graphical.

I've never had this problem before with previous versions of Ubuntu the last 3 years, only with 11.04.

I have the following hardware:

July 6th update:

Well the screen problem has happened again. Between now and he last time, I tried changing screen savers to see if
this would resolve the issue. When I switch to ctrl-f1 screen, I killed the screen saver process, then went back to graphical but
there was no improvement. Although I could move the mouse cursor around the screen, there was no redraw. I tried
alt-tab to see if tabbing through running apps would force a redraw, I tried clicking on various areas on the screen and still no joy.

I've really no idea where to start t'shooting this matter as from a command line point of view, the system is 100% usable.
As I use this desktop for work and therefore depend on the graphical, I need a solution.

July 7th update:

After disabling entirely my screensaver (I think) yesterday, I arrived this morning to find the same problem, but slightly
different this time. Instead of a black screen, I had the full screen display of my last session before i went home for the evening.
The mouse worked, my synergy was still working as I was able to move the mouse to a different machine's screen but the
screen image, which displays my clock showed a time from several hours ago, presumably when things turned bad.

Normal behaviour would have me type my password to unlock the session as I did lock the session when I left for the evening.

I've still no idea where or what to t'shoot this matter. Log files show no obvious bloodstains and the matter remains a mystery.

July 13th update:

Well not sure if anyone cares about this as I've had absolutely zero feedback from anyone. But I think I have found a solution as it has been several days since I have had the annoying black screen problem stuffing up my GUI session.
I disabled the Power Management and so far so good. If anyone else is unfortunate to have same problem as me, do visit the following: System, Preferences, Screensaver, Power Management. Under the Display option, choose Never.

Works a charm for whatever hideous bug was lurking in PM for my hardware under Natty.

Good luck and goodbye.

Given that over a week passed and no one has replied yet (before me), this is likely to be an issue that is not widely known about (or at least the workaround, which you have discovered, is not widely known). Therefore, I recommend that you report this as a bug. If you choose to do this, please read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs carefully first.

Perhaps you know what package in Ubuntu to report it against. Unfortunately, if not, I cannot tell you--I am not sure myself.

Does anyone reading this know what the proper package (or packages) are to report this bug against, **considering the content of Rob Annandale's July 13th update** (added to the question description)?

The problem you are experiencing is that you have no video after resuming from suspend. This resembles old bug 494066, but that was fixed a long time ago and never affected Ubuntu 11.04. This description should enable you to search for the bug. It would probably be filed against the package linux in Ubuntu. (Searching for bugs, as well as how to report them, is covered in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.) To report the bug, unless you find some reason to think it should be reported against some other package, report it against linux in Ubuntu. To initiate your report, run "ubuntu-bug linux" (after reading https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs carefully and searching for the bug).

If you find the bug already reported, or after you file your report, please link the bug and this question to each other using the "Link existing bug" link near the top of this question page.

I have the same problem with an HP 6730b lapton also with an Intel card ("Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller").

When you leave the system "idle" for 15 minutes and the screensaver is launched, *sometimes* I'm unable to return to the desktop. I can move the mouse but I can't unlock the screen.

All processes continue working (including chrome / firefox downloads), as you can see in a text-mode session, but to continue working in X I need to restart system.

 Any idea?

@Santiago Romero
You can prevent this from occurring by disabling suspend in the power management settings. That's what's not working.

Rob Annandale has not replied for a while, so if you want this to be handled as a bug, probably need to file the report. See the instructions above.

So In "System -> Preferences -> Power Settings" I should change "Suspend" by "Blackout screen"?

(sorry if any translation is not right, my system is in Spanish and I don't know the right "strings" in the menues).

I've also disabled the Power Management daemon in "System -> Preferences -> Startup applications".

Any other place to change it?

 Thanks.

@Santiago Romero
That should be sufficient, yes.
