Training

Asked by Andrew Marshall

I am a newcomer to Ubuntu and have just installed Gutsy. I have average knowledge about computers but really want to know more about Ubuntu. I get really confused by the different terms and many well-meaning people often quote or expect you to know things, which quite frankly sound double dutch to me. I have looked at books on Amazon, but they tend to be old or some are not due out until next year.

I'm just wondering that with there being an upgrade every 6 months, how us laypeople would be best advised to learn all we can when the available books always seem to be out of date. Us newcomers feel better when a book says 'click this and this will happen' and it does. I have tried to find some websites. Should we rely on fee paying courses on the net?

There is also extensive and usable documentation in the help system. Spending about two or three hours reading the Help available from the GNOME-panel (the panel at the top of the screen by default) will give you a good understandig of the basics and the new terms.

This may be totally unfamiliar to people coming from Windows or OS-X, but the help system in Ubuntu IS USEFUL, and will give answers to most questions.
