Firewire device not recognized

Asked by mdl

Attempting to connect by firewire an Avastor portable HDD (NTFS file system) on ubuntu it appears the device is not found.
I have loaded firewire modules IEEE1394 and raw1394 and also ohc. However, cat /proc/scsi does not include the device.
Connected by usb the device appears as /dev/sdf1. I am unable to locate any special device drivers. I have tested the device attached to a Windows machine. I intend to test next with a knoppix live CD and also undertake upgrade to newest Ubuntu 7.10.
I want to locate the device, mount and write to it using ntfs-3g.
