How do I logon from another computer?

Asked by mikehi

Is there a way to log on to the Ubuntu 7.10 computer from another computer on my hardwired home network and work with the Gnome UI from that remote computer? My two other computers run win XP.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi:

Try Virtual Network Computer:
http://www.realvnc.com/
you should install the server in the ubuntu computer and the client on the others. It worked for me a few years back, it should still work

Windows -- connection to --> Ubuntu
On Ubuntu 7.10 you must only configure System->Preference->Remote Desktop
On Windows pc i always use ultravnc http://www.uvnc.com/
To connect from Windows to Ubuntu use the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:0 address

Ubuntu -- connection to --> Windows
On Windows pc start the Ultravnc server, if .not. already start as service.
To connect Ubuntu to Windows go to Applications->Internet->Terminal server client
and type the remote Windows ip address and select vnc protocol

I like much more krdc (kde) than "Terminal server client" to install open a terminal and type
sudo apt-get install krdc
then you will find krdc under Applications->Internet->krdc try it to connect to Ubuntu or Windows desktop
