Nvidia Geforce 5500

I have tried every tutorial and still need help. i have an Nvidia Geforce Fx 5500 graphics card, and although I do what the forums say, it still doesn't work. I am completely new so I need very easy to understand (terminal is needed, I presume) to get it to work.

if on dapper sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx than sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and change the driver to nvidia. than sudo nvidia-glx-config enable restart X.
