guide to configure compiz cube from scratch and step by step

Asked by Miguel Mayol

I do like compiz cube.
I have ati fglrx installed as driver.
I would like a script or a step by step guide form scratch to configure compiz cube.for Ubuntu 7.10

I also would like the distribution to configure it by defult as Sabayon does, even running from Live CD, downloading propietary drivers on installation, at least as option.

Thanks in advance

Miguel,

Compiz is installed by default in Ubuntu 7.10, and can be enabled under System - Preferences - Appearance - Visual Effects

Due to stability issues, the default configuration does not use the Desktop Cube plugin. This and many other plugins can be configured by installing CCSM, the Compiz Config Settings Manager:

sudo aptitude install compizconfig-settings-manager

This package installs a Compiz "control panel" in System - Preferences - Advanced Desktop Effects Settings.

You may find it useful to make a backup of your current configuration from within CCSM before making any alterations.

Good luck!

Chris

Thanks a lot, I've done it before writing my post.

I have the cube configured.

But...

I cannot recommend friends swapping to Linux, if they have to tune a lot the installation.

That is why I ask for a complete guide step by step for newbis.

From where even myself can learn.

Last time i configured Beryl cube, I could put a different background for each size of the cube, I used Sabayon, but portage begun to have several mistakes, but sabayon installer is a little better than 7.10 one becouse it lets you to choose betwwen XGL or AIXGL and then you can use compiz from the LiveCD

I have now a basic cube. i will spend some time for configure it nice.

But this 7.10 works great with ati and nvidia propietary drivers, rocks even for games with wine, it is almos the distro I'm waiting for ask my windows friends, that call me for solving windows problems, no more problems, install Ubuntu, it s better.

But the cube is the most important thing they want from Linux, and I do not want to setup it each time, i would like an ATI propietary - fglrx - script and a nvidia propietary script for configure the cube.

There are a excellent guide in spanish, but is for Ubuntu 6 and 7.04.

There are other solution making special distributions with cube preconfigured for ati and nvidia propietary druvers or even one caled ati nvidia gamers edition or something like that with a wine icon at one face "windows game desktop" of the cube with some demos running under wine.
