upgrade to ubuntu 7.1 not working

Asked by Ian Brownlie

I have been trying to upgrade from ubuntu 7.04 to 7.1, every time I try I get as far as "fetching 93 out of 97 files" and there it stops. I have left it for up to 30 mins but thats as far as it will ever go, it seems to freeze from that point. Can anyone help please?

Ian,

Can you summarise the steps you have taken to reach this error message?

Also, the contents of /etc/apt/sources.list might be helpful.

Please bear in mind that in the days immediately after the release, the download mirrors will have been under a far greater load than usual and therefore your problems may have been caused by temporary network problems.

Cheers,

Chris

Thanks for replying Chris, Please bear in mind that I'm in my 60's and a lot of this is new to me. I merely saw the upgrade on the update manager and clicked on it. I frankly wouldn't know how to find out the contents of etc/apt/sources.list. I'm not sure how to go about it. I so much want to continue using ubuntu because of the general reliability and the confidence in the internet, a really bad virus finished me with windows. Therefore I would like to keep the system as up to date as possible. any help you could give me would be very much appreciated.
           Thanks

Ian,

Firstly, do not worry - each release is supported for at least 18 months (three years for Long Term Support releases), so you will continue to receive bug fixes and security patches for 7.04 until October 2008.

If you are having problems using the network update, an alternative (albeit slightly more complicated) method is available where you download the Alternate Install CD for 7.10 and then use that CD to upgrade. This is documented at the bottom of this page:

Good luck!

Chris
