Bios can't see Live CD

Asked by Kevin Sullivan

When trying to use my Live CD for Ubuntu 7.10, it boots straight to the Windows XP screen. I do have the boot order set and I have tried numerous times, but it doesn't work. I even have tried the normal and alternative CDs and both were checked to make sure they were not corrupted. However, I do have two CD/DVD drives. There is only one problem: The master CD/DVD drive is out of commission. As a guide I think there is one of two solutions (however I wouldn't know, since I am asking this): Fix the master optical drive or switch them so the working one of the two is the master. I just don't know how to do either. Any help?

First, to be absolutely sure it's not a problem with the burning of the disk:
1. When looking at the disk in Windows, do you have lots of files and folders on the disk, or just one? If you have only one file, have a look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto
2. If possible, double check the disk on a different computer

If it is in fact a problem with the master cdrom, you may have to get a screw driver and open up your computer to fix it (check with warranty stuff before opening the case). Depending on the age of your computer, the "master" and "slave" may be set by either a jumper setting (older), or which plug the cable is plugged in to (newer).

An overview of the jumper settings can be found on this site:
http://www.perfectdrivers.com/howto/seconddrive.html

Basically you would want to remove the dead drive, and set the working drive to the master drive, either by setting the jumper to "MA" (instead of SL) or plugging it into the same cable the dead drive was plugged into.

I hope this helps!
