Ubuntu 11.04 will not install - followup from post:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/160446

See items 3 and 4 on web page:
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download

I don't get anything that resembles the images shown on the web page when I attempt LiveCD or Install. I get to the error message shown below and then that's it.

   The installer encountered an unrecoverable
error. A desktop session will now be run
so that you may investigate the problem
   or try installing again.
                              [ OK ]

Is there some workaround to the installer? How can I determine what the "unrecoverable error" is? What to do? Is an incremental installer available?

Try Xbuntu for your 256M memory system. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements for the minimum system requirements.

Hello Ubfan,

Thank you for your post.

I can see where some confusion originated regarding system requirements for Ubuntu 11.04. I viewe the page:

https://help.ubuntu.com/11.04/installation-guide/i386/minimum-hardware-reqts.html

Table 3.2. Recommended Minimum System Requirements
Install Type RAM (minimal) RAM (recommended) Hard Drive
No desktop 64 megabytes 256 megabytes 1 gigabyte
With Desktop 64 megabytes 512 megabytes 5 gigabytes

According to Table 3.2, "With Desktop should run in 64mb." I was not aware of and had not looked at the community help pages you suggested. My next actions will most likely be to get more memory. Perhaps, I may attempt installing Xbuntu as you suggested. However, one of the drawing features which enticed me to evaluate Ubuntu is Unity. I really like the method of using only one menu bar at the screen top and I really dislike Window's, Gnomes and KDE's method of including a menu bar at the top of each window.

Problem solved - at least for now.
