RealPlayer10 Gold for Linux won't install.

Asked by Ray Sanchez

I'm a Windows user, new to Ubuntu Linux Gutsy Gibbon. I can't get RealPlayer for Linux to install, try as I might. Those cryptic commands on the Real website failed to work. Any ideas? Thanx.

Witold, I regret to say I've had no success in getting RealPlayer to install. I very much appreciate your responding to my need. Really. I was brought up with DOS (before Windows) and this is like going back to DOS, only different--all those cryptic commands tend to turn me off. The Terminal window is like the DOS Prompt. :-( On a positive note, Witold, I've been able to get just about everything else to function on Ubuntu Linux; I find that--with every new release of Canonical's Ubuntu, this operating system gets more user-friendly. I like what I'm experiencing with Ubuntu and I intend to learn it and will keep it installed on one of my four PCs. Thank you for trying to assist me. God bless you.

Respectfully,
Ray

Did you try helix player? It is an opensource player for realplayer media.
You can install it from Synaptic package manager with no terminal.

Also, you can install realplayer without terminal:
Install from prepackaged .deb file
http://www.debian-multimedia.org/pool/main/r/realplay/realplayer_10.0.8-0.1_i386.deb

Then you just go and double click the downloaded file.

Another way is to add commercial repository
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu#head-b75a0c6c7e357640731529980d3f3ad3614b9a76
Just change the feisty to gutsy
After that you can install from Synaptic.

Please try and tell me whether you manage to solve your problem.

Regards,
Witold

Witold, I am the bearer of good news: with your wonderful assistance, I was finally able to get RealPlayer 10 Gold not only to install BUT to do the things I want it to. 8>) While I have yet to fine-tune the player, it's working fine. Your advice on how to download it WITHOUT the Terminal window did the trick for me. I owe you one! Thanx ever so much. This novice to Ubuntu Linux is very, very appreciative. Indeed!

Respectfully,
Ray 8>)
