intalled ubuntu and neither system will now boot

loaded ubuntu from website ubuntu.com followed instructions and installed...did not recognize ubuntu at first restarted computer and downloaded finished and still acted strange...would not start either windows xp or ubuntu...loaded ubuntu inside of windows as instructed ...please advise dell dimension 4100 pentium 3 processor...originally windows me but has windows xp was installed....

hi...well i was able to get ubuntu up and running but it is very slow and windows xp will not load...any ideas?...hard to restart ubuntu as well..thanks John

was able to get to windows thru f8 and reloaded xp with last know good configuration...

You should have downloaded os-prober and run it. I presume that now you lost Ubuntu boot.
To reinstall Ubuntu boot: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Reinstalling%20from%20LiveCD
If after you don't have Windows in menu, run commands:
   sudo apt-get install os-prober
   sudo os-prober
   sudo update-grub
