Black screen with nothing... does CRTL-ALT-F1 do anything?

Sorry, that was an information request. Also, if CRTL-ALT-F1 works, login, and then paste the output of the following command (who knows, might be due to a proprietary driver that's broken with your card *shrugs* ):

grep Driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Thanks,
Ryan

CRTL-ALT-F1 this didn't do anythin then reboot and enter ubuntu safemode then i enter this command grep Driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf i got the following results

      Driver "kbd"
      Driver "mouse"
      Driver "symaptics"
      Driver "wacom"
      Driver "wacom"
      Driver "wacom"
# Driver "ati"

Ok, you aren't using a proprietary driver by the looks of it.
If you know a bit about your machine / graphics setup, go into safemode and then run:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

and answer the questions.
After that, reboot with

sudo shutdown -r now

and try login in X/GDM/Graphical Login screen.

Hope this helps,
Ryan
