7.1 image problem

Asked by tomcei

Downloaded the v7.10 of Ubuntu. Put image on disc. deleted and recreated a partition using the windows xp setup disc. exited and switched CD's (put in the disc with ubuntu on it). booted CD in DOS and then tried a few options all resulting in the error with the title "I/O error" and then with the main error "Erro reading boot CD". Then it gives me the option to reboot. WHY?!

Hello,
Thank you for your question.
Have you tried burning Ubuntu 7.10 onto another optical disc?
It sounds like it is probably a bad burn.

Nah. Lemme give specs real quick didnt even think of it. Compaq Armada E500 P3 600Mhz, 256 Ram, and ATI Rage 128 Mobile. I'll try another disc. I used Alcohol 120% unregistered. Lemme try Nero see if thats any better.

I think its the download actually. I tried just using the CD through windows and mounting it w/ daemon tools and its still giving the same reactions the burned CD is giving. Which is NOTHING! I'll try d/l from another location...

Tomcei,

You can verify the integrity of the download by checking its MD5SUM against that published by Ubuntu at http://releases.ubuntu.com/gutsy/MD5SUMS

To generate an MD5SUM from your downloaded file, open a terminal window and execute:

md5sum [ubuntu ISO filename].iso

More detailed instructions on checking MD5SUMs is available at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

If you still have problems with optical media, it could be a hardware issue with your CD drive. Try burning at a slower speed, a different brand of discs, or a different drive (if available).

Cheers,

Chris

I'll try this out but DUH i didnt even think of the different speeds. I burned this image using my desktop PC which is a P4 3.2 Ghz! and my cd-rw drive is way faster than my cd-rom drive in my laptop. I'll still check that out though because even when i mounted the image file using daemon tools, i tried to autorun it and try a couple options just by exploring the CD and nothing worked :( . Thx for the idea i'll give it a try!

Tomcei,

Yes it does mean that the file you have stored locally doesn't match what's on the server. I'd advise downloading the file again, perhaps from a different mirror.

Good luck!

Chris
