fresh installation of 7.10 doesn't boot

Asked by mtribbett

using the live cd I installed ubuntu 7.1 desktop - the instillation seems to go fine - when it tells me to restart and ejects the disk, it restarts but then does not load, just gives me a black screen (immediatly after the press escape countdown).
i've got an ati radeon mobility m6 ly card - p4 2.2ghz

i tried reconfiging the xserver as per advice in a different post, and after i reconfiged and typed 'startx' it booted in a privliged login?? but upon restart still get black screen.

i went into recovery mode and typed:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

and got into the gui - seemed to run really slow though and said it couldn't initialize HAL?
shut it down and restarted . . didn't actually fix anything

i let it sit at the black screen for five minutes and eventually it gave me the log in screen - and i'm able to log in.

Same problem here.
I went into recovery mode and typed:

exit

since i was logged as root, the log in screen came up and i was able to log.

Can you help with this problem?
