Need Indexing Program for Ubuntu Feisty

 Have need for quality indexing program in order to index thousands of names, places, events. Something like Sky would be
nice but needs to be Ubuntu/Linux compatible, not Windows based. Does anyone have suggestions?

Jim,

Honestly, your best bet is Beagle. Use Synaptic to install the beagle package. After that, you'll see Beagle Desktop Search in the future. You can also install Deskbar, a very nifty applet that you can place in your panel, which collaborates right off the bat with Beagle.

Of course, you would need to arrange these names/places/events in text files if you want to use Beagle. If not, you are better off going with a database program such as OpenOffice Base. The plus side of OpenOffice Base is that you can run that on Windows, should you ever need to. You also get a choice of database formats, from the veritable SQLite (very light, single file, portable) to advanced database management systems such as MySQL or PostgreSQL.

Thanks Rudd-O for the suggestion. Now I open the OOBase and learn to use it properly for it will certainly have some Windows activity
later.
