the screen on my P3 notebook does not display properly with Xubuntu

I tried running Xubuntu on a Dell Inspiron 8000 with a P3 processor. It boots up fine, but after booting, the display is messed up. The screen is divided into three sections and the right and left sides appear to be normal but the middle section looks identical to the right side. So I can't view any information in the middle of the screen.

I had the same problem with my Inspiron 8000. If you hit Fn-F7 once or twice the display should return to normal.
