How to find Kate editor in Add/Remove Applications

Asked by Stephen Gornick

I am trying to find my favorite Linux text editor, Kate, in the list of applications from Add/Remove Applications. I changed the "Show" to list "All available applications", and enter "kate" in the Search field. The results panel shows: "There is no matching application available."

Is it there and I'm just not seeing it? Or if it not there, should it be (i.e., file a bug report ?)

I can install it using Synaptic Package Manager, but I am trying to figure out why I cannot find it in Add/Remove Applications.

As far as I can recall, not all aplications appear in Add/Remove applications. Kate might be one of those applications, since it's part of the KDE / Kubuntu suite of applications, and Add/Remove is intentionally kept rather well pruned-down to make apps for the Ubuntu suite easier to find. You can install Kate by installing the kate package.

If you use synaptics, click on Search button and a dialog box opens. Type kate then then click search on the dialog box . It should come up. Then just mark it for installation then click apply.

Synaptic shows over 20,000 items so that makes sense.

I still have a problem with the option "All Open Source applications" not representing all open source applications, so have filed Bug #156696
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-app-install/+bug/156696

Thanks for your help.
