How to install Ubuntu

I have a IBM / Lenovo T42 thinkpad, it currently has no OS as a new hard drive was installed. How do I install Ubuntu 7.10 (desktop) to a PC in this state? If I order a cd or download to a cd (on my other pc) and load the cd in the T42 will the install automatically start when I turn on the PC? I need help with the basics. Thanks

You just boot from the cd and get a working system. There you will find installation icon on the desktop. Launch that and follow the instructions.
