inconsistent filesystem structure

i have a dual boot system with win xp and fiesty .........it was working fine for the last two months ......till tomorrow ...this morning when i tried starting ubuntu it said error 16 inconsistent file structure press a key to continue
on pressing the key it gave another message
error 18 :selected cylinder exceeds maximum permitted by the bios.

i have tried various permutation and combination but the errors are till dere.....when i enter command line and then escape it back to the boot menu i manage to start the windows bt ubuntu does nt start..........i have not applied any update in near future nor tinkered with any system setting
so i m lost for any clue why it may have happened

Could be a hard drive problem I guess... You should try to check your harddrive from a LiveCD. There are plenty of solutions, the Ubuntu liveCD can do it I think, or you can try a CD like Ultimate BootCD.
