Things move fast these days, Beryl has been largely deprecated in favour of Compiz Fusion (see http://www.opencompositing.org/). The good news is that this has been integrated into Ubuntu 6.10, so you already have it.

To access the configuration you need to open System -> Administration -> Appearence, then go to the Visual Effects tab. If you need to install a non-driver for your graphics card, there will be a wizard to guide you through the process. If this fails to start try opening the the System -> Administration -> Restricted Drivers Manager.

If you want to access more advanced Compiz Fusion settings, then I recommend you install compizconfig-settings-manager from the universe repository through System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager. You will need an Internet connection to do this.

Beryl is no longer supported. It's been replaced with Compiz Fusion, which is included with 7.10 (aka gutsy). To enable it, go to System>Preferences>Appearence and go to the visual effects tab. Select either normal or extra. Depending on what graphics card you have, it might want to install drivers. If it does, tell it that it can, restart (or just restart the xserver by closing all open programs and pressing ctrl+alt+backspace) and enable them again. If you want to customise it, press alt+f2 and type: "sudo aptitude install compizconfig-settings-manager -y" (without the quotes) and tick the "run in terminal" checkbox. It will ask you for your password. Type it in. Now go back to the visual affects window, select custom and click on preferences.
