If you backed up you xorg.conf (in /etc/X11/xorg.conf) as ~possibly~ stated on the howto that you followed, there are a couple of easy steps to get you GUI back.

press Ctrl-Alt-F3. This will change from the current screen (F7, the graphical screen) to a text based console, where you should be able to login.

Once you've logged in sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup (providing you've made a backup) to /etc/X11/xorg.conf

once that's copied (milliseconds should pass)

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart (I'm assuming you're using the default desktop environment, Gnome).
other possibilities would be /etc/init.d/xdm restart or /etc/init.d/kdm restart.

If you didn't back up your xorg.conf (which is very naughty) then you'll have to try and regenerate a new one (which could be a little complex for a newbie). The other option is to post your xorg.conf onto ubuntuforums, where someone will be able to tell you which options you've left out - and hopefully tidy it up for you to put back on the PC.

Best of Luck.

Can you help with this problem?
