7.10 Gutsy Gibbon WIred & WIreless Network SLOW!
I upgraded two machines to 7.10. One was 7.04, upgraded via network upgrade. One was 6.06LTS, upgraded by installing over existing system (keeping /home, /usr/local and other data). One machine uses wireless, the other uses Ethernet. Both machines connect to an Edimax wireless/wired router, then another router, and out a cable modem. Both have miserably slow, bad network performance.
I disabled IPv6 on both by putting "alias net-pf-10 off" in /etc/modprobe.
The wireless box appears to be sending a ton of data (the packets sent and bytes sent counters keep going up quickly) but I can't figure out what's doing the sending. Wireshark doesn't show any unusual packets going out. The wired box is normal, except for the slow slow network access. Even accessing the router's webpage is very slow.
I am sending this from a 7.04 laptop connected via wireless to the same router, and internet access is fine here, so I think the problem is local to the 7.10 boxes, or perhaps between the 7.10 boxes and the router. Pinging from the wired box to the router drops ~30% of packets, but my 7.04 laptop pings out fine.
The wireless machine uses a USB wireless adapter (can't get specs at the moment because I disabled the network on that machine). The wired machine uses an Intel 82557/8/9 Ethernet Pro 100 interface.
Anybody else having network misery with a new 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon install?

On further investigation: booting and running the 7.10 LiveCD works much better (maybe as well as before the upgrade, though it's hard to tell when the system goes to the CD for every binary). I'll collect system stats from the LiveCD system and the installed system and post to compare.

dmesg, sysctl -A, lspci -v, lsmod all the same between the LiveCD and the installed system...

I have the exact same problem as do countless others over at the ubuntuforums, the only thing that helped me was changing DNS servers, I'm using an intel 2200 wireless card connected to a speedtouch modem/router, only machine here with problems is this one with Gutsy, my second computer hasn't been upgraded and runs 7.04, no DNS server change and has no problems whatsoever. This is really frustrating.

I'm pretty sure my problem isn't DNS. The Ethernet machine provides DNS service for all the machines on the network (itself, the wireless 7.10 machine and the wireless 7.04 laptop). There's a slight delay in resolving names, but I think the problem is lower in the stack: I'm dropping 10-30% of packets between the 7.10 boxes and the Edicom router. Even looking at the router webpage is slow, even when I access it by IP address (thus taking DNS out of the equation).
If I can find a long Ethernet cable, I'll plug my main 7.10 box into the router closer to the cable modem. It'd be nice to discover that it's a bad interaction between 7.10 and Edicom. However, as I noted above, the 7.10 LiveCD works fine. It's only the installed (hard disk) versions of 7.10 that are slow.

I had the same problem and the answer on my computer was that my router's IP was listed in the DNS servers list. I deleted the entry and I have my full cable speed back!

I should have checked this out more before I said I had an answer. In fact, all I did was to mask the symptom. By deleting my router's IP address from the DNS servers list, I had fast browsing like I should, but my router's DHCP server was assigning itself as DNS so the problem came back when I restarted the network. I finally went with the first suggestion, to disable IPv6, and now all seems well.

For me the solution was the following:
1. make a file called 'blacklist-ipv6' in /etc/modprobe.d/
2. inside the file put this text: blacklist ipv6
3. after the next reboot the ipv6 module wasn't be loaded (lsmod | grep ipv6 displays nothing)
