Make sure the hard drive is plugged in all the way. The hard disk couldn't possibly be physically missing due to installing Ubuntu. If it's an XP SP1 or no-SP disk and you have a SATA hard drive, it won't recognize the hard drive. You would then need a floppy disk with the SATA drivers in order to load XP onto the drive.

windows is fairly rubbish when it comes to dealing with any other opperating systems, you will generally have to either use an ubuntu live-cd to shrink the ubuntu partition (so you can fit windows xp on) and then install windows xp. or use a live-cd to format the entire drive. install windows then install ubuntu.

if you take the former option you'll need to follow this guide as windows destroys some information needed to dual-boot ubuntu and windows:

Can you help with this problem?
