There are many missing parts to 7.10

Asked by jhmac

To somebody that knows the answer.

Where is the encryption access to 7.10? Where is Automatix? I have no install function in my new install. I have no partition function. There is no IE 6 install icon. There seem to be many things missing? I feel like I am better off with Feisty.

Jim

About Automatix, it's NOT in the default installation of Gutsy for sure, but it was not for Feisty. It was not for any installation of Ubuntu to my knowledge. Same for partition utility. It's NOT by default on any Ubuntu version. You will find it on the liveCD, but not on the installed system. You have to install it by yourself.

For IE, same, I never saw any icon to install Internet Explorer on Ubuntu. Maybe it's in Automatix by using wine, but surely not in the default install.

For encryption, only the alternate CD provides this functionnality, it's not on the LiveCD.

I don't understand what you mean by "I have no install function in my new install".

But except this last point, your install seems quite normal to me. If you had those softwares in Feisty, they don't come from the default install.

I think by Install function, you were referring to a way to install programs?

Well to do that in Ubuntu, you type
sudo apt-get install PROGRAMNAME
Thats how its always been done.

Automatix was a 3rd party program written to install programs for people. I would not recommend this program myself because I have heard that it can corrupt installs.

Internet Explorer is a Windows only program. You may have been able to run it through a Windows emulator such as wine.
I recommend you use Firefox instead to browse the web.

If you want to partition a drive, you use a program called gparted. If its not already installed open your console and do
sudo apt-get install gparted. Then to run it you type sudo gparted. (that way it runs as root)

I do not know what you mean by encryption access. Are you talking about SSH?

Well then how do you encrypt. All of the explanations that I saw were not on my system. Access means "find". I could not find how to encrypt.
There is debate about Automatix but it was included in the main menu of Feisty. I used it and did not find any problems with it.

There are too many negative opinions about things. I am interestd in some of those and other people don't consider them negative.

There was a install icon under administration that is missing. The partition icon is missing in administration options.

I am sorry but I cannot put a screen shot on this thing to prove what I am talking about. Also if you look at the list of Administration and Preferences in 7.10 compared to 7.04, 7.10 is much shorter. Go and check it out.

Thanks,

Jim

It sounds (to me) like you have a user account that doesn't have the "allow administrative tasks" (or something - I don't have Ubuntu here right now). Are you using the user-account created when you installed, or have you created a new user?

To launch the user administration tool (if it's not in your System -> Administration menu), open a Terminal (from Accessories) and type:

gksudo users-admin

It will ask for your password. If this doesn't work then your current user account doesn't have the "allow ..." thing I mentioned.

If that does work then something --weird-- has happened to your user account. Maybe create a new one (with admin rights)?

Without the Install icon, you can start the Installer with (from a Terminal again):

gksudo synaptic

About Automatix: the other guys are right, Automatix is a third-party add-on, not an official part of Ubuntu. If you had the icon in the menu someone put it there for you. These days you don't need it - the Ubuntu developers have looked at what worked in Automatix (and what didn't) and added much of the functionality.

Encryption: This page https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GnuPrivacyGuardHowto has a lot of stuff about encryption. Depending on what you want to do, you may wish to install Seahorse with the following command (from a terminal):

sudo aptitude install seahorse

Hope some of the above helps. Of course, if you can't run the gksudo command none of them will probably work. Oh, and sorry if some of the commands are wrong - as I say I'm not in front of my new Ubuntu 7.10 install at the moment.

I will try some of those things, I do have gksudo and sudo as functional. I have been using the Ubuntu CE (Feisty edition) and it appeared to have a lot more than the 7.10 and I am not talking about the religious software or the parental controls.

I have used the Ubuntu 7.04 a little and it appeared to have a lot more features than the new 7.10 version.

I will wait until the CE edition comes out.
