Need to either "Authenticate" outgoing mail or find another provider

Asked by Rick Collins

Earthlink is now requiring "Authentication" on outgoing e-mail to reduce spam. They offer advice on how to do this with certain Operating Systems and e-mail programs, NOT including Linux or Thunderbird or Evolution. Their article on this is entitled "How to configure E-mail Settings for SMTP Authentication and Port 587". I need to either get this handled per Earthlink requirements or find a more Linux-friendly provider in the North San Diego County area. Any suggestions? I am at a dead end trying to figure this out. Thanks, Rick

http://kb.earthlink.net/case.asp?article=127339 describes how to set up Thunderbird on Windows. Should be the same with Thunderbird on Linux Systems.

Yes. I had done most of this on my own (without being aware of the Windows Thunderbird instructions link) trying to solve this, but the step of changing the server from smtp to smtpauth was critical, and solved the problem. The port had been changed to 587 earlier, trying to fix this. I had been told by Earthlink tech support that "Earthlink offered no support for either Thunderbird or Linux". Thank You!
