delete or reformat ubuntu partition

Asked by Rene Alejandro

I used to have Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) dual-booted with WinXPin my system but screwed up my GRUB when I used Parition Magic to merge a Windows partition.

At first my system wouldn't boot to any OS (error 17), so I used Super Grub Disk to fix my WinXP boot successfully; but I still get an error 17 in trying to boot to Ubuntu 7.04.

Now I have Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) and I would like to do a clean install...how do I reformat or delete all the old Ubuntu files without touching my XP installation?

I would also like to resize the ubuntu partition.

TIA

Hi:

When you install ubuntu, you will have the option to choose where you want to install it, and all you have to do is say, reformat, you will see its quite intuitive, it gives you boxes to check if you want to format.
At the same time you can resize the partitions.
Again I would suggest having a backup of your important data.

This is all very possible during install if you select the "Manual" option on the "Prepare disk space" screen.

I heartily recommend you read this guide: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/installing#partitioning

Hi, thanks for your help.

I downloaded Gparted Live CD and deleted all Ubuntu partitions.

I then used Super Grub Disk to fix my WinXP MBR.

Then used partition magic 8 to resize my partitions in my 250mb hdd.

Slipped in Ubuntu 7.10 cd and installed it.

Not a very elegant solution, but everything works fine now.
