I have the same problem, only I don't have a command line, I only have the Kubuntu Start-up screen. I can't fix it...

I don't what caused this problem (I'm trying to find out), but I fixed it by downgrading the xserver-xorg-core package. From the command line, type:

apt-get install xserver-xorg-core=1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10

jlippens: to get to a command line, press Ctrl+Alt+F1 (well, anything from F1 to F6). This switches you from Virtual Console 7 (where the splash screen and the X server do business) to VC1, which, by default, allows console login.

Sorry, that command should be prefixed with "sudo":

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-core=1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10

This only works if you're in the admin group (and, if you're the primary user, you probably are).

Thanks Jon, that did the trick.

I think this package should backout until it is resolved because it causes a lot of headache.

The package was updated pretty quickly, it just takes some time to be distributed to the mirrors. You should be able to carry on updating as normal now, just make sure the version you're updating to ends in ubuntu10.4

Can you help with this problem?
