After installing Ubuntu 11.04 get "Cannot Display this Video Mode" on startup screen

Asked by Joe Kavaky

I installed Ubuntu Natty Narwhal 11.04 (AMD64 & i386) on my Dell Inspiron 531 AMD Athlon 64 and in both cases when I boot the computer I get the following on the black screen

            Cannot Display This Video Mode
     Optimum resolution 1440 x 900 60 Hz

I also have Windows XP installed on this computer. I don't get the usually startup screen where I select which OS that I want to start, either Ubuntu or Windows.

When this screen is up, if I press the down arrow key 10 times, I get the Windows XP to start. If I just press the enter key, Ubuntu starts.

Any help - else I will go back to Ubuntu 10.10.

Boot to Ubuntu (enter at blank screen)

Then uncomment the following line in /etc/default grub
from
#GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480
to
GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480

At terminal,
sudo update-grub
