big trouble with ubuntu 7.10

Asked by john

Computer MSI Laptop M670. I have just upgraded from Ubuntu 7.04 to 7.10, and have enormous trouble trying to open the default operating system, the 7.10 generic 2.622.16. It did not open. Trying Generic 2.622.16 did open, but the screen resolution was very poor. Now with attempts to change that, I have 4 background pages in parallel, and horizontal lines. Can I get back to what it should be and how, when I cannot read anything on the screen?

The graphics are by nNidia GEFORCE 60 6100.

Hmm. Your question isn't really clear, but it sounds like you're having display driver problems.

Here are some steps that might help you:

1. Reboot.
2. When the 'countdown' appears, press escape to enter the GRUB boot menu.
3. Select 'Recovery Mode' and press enter.

You will end up at a terminal prompt.

4. Type "dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg". You will see a series of questions about your display. Answer them conservatively! When you get to the "driver" question, select "nv", not "nvidia", just to be safe.

5. Type "reboot". This time, don't use recovery mode.

With any luck, you'll get to a graphical login this way. Let me know!

Thanks you for this guidance. I have followed it through, and found that after the dpkg command I got a warning not to overwrite the existing set, not a set of questions. I have also found that the multi page screen has now rectified itself. I also checked the Screen and Graphics window that the driver is nv, The resolution also is acceptable. So that seems to have solved the big trouble - I wrote that in sheer desperation since I had no Ubuntu system operating. Now I have. Thank you.
