upgrade feisty thru windows internet connection

Asked by Neil Reisner

I have Feisty running on a box with no internet connection. I have an internet connection on a windows box. I want to update Feisty. How can I download the files I need and move them to the Feisty box using a CD or a thumb drive or the like?

Thanks in advance for advice.

I don't see how this is possible. Since your apt won't get any notice of updates without an internet connection its not possible to make a list out of the required packages and downloading them off the repositories manually on Windows.

However, if you have a contact who uses Ubuntu _with_ an internet connection you can ask him/her to use AptOnCD to make Update CDs for you after he updates his/her system.

Another way would be to setup ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) between your two PCs.

But if you do know how to make a list of updates to download, check the following link:

You can use the "alternate cd" to start an upgrade.
Just follow the upgrading instructions you can find on the Ubuntu.com site, burn an alternate cd on the Windows machine and start upgrading.

Sorry, got confused over his usage of Upgrade in the title and Update in the description.

My apologies for the inartfully worded question.

The goal here is to upgrade to Gutsy. Looking at the upgrade page, I see that I need to make sure that Feisty is up to date before I install Gutsy.

So, what I need to do, if possible, is get the Feisty updates, apply them and then upgrade Gutsy using the CD I've already burned.

Alternatively, it may just be easier to save the data files I have on the Ubuntu box, reformat and install Gutsy from scratch.

Thanks.

Mmm..I'd say that in a situation like this you'd better save off your data and reinstall from scratch.
Upgrading out of the network could bring some problems, better start with a brand new installation.
But don't forget to backup your data! :-) (I talk because I did that mistake, years ago :-( )
