How to get programs not to default to the system beep?

Asked by Sidarth Dasari

Hi,
My computer often gives me that loud and annoying system beep for certain actions I do. For example in xchat or pidgin when I backspace all the way to the end I get that beep.
Also when I get a new mail in thunderbird, I get that beep.

Is there a way to turn this beep off or get programs to default to something less annoying?

Thank you

Navigate to System->Preferences->Sound->System Beep
Uncheck "Enable System Beep

Well, that was already unchecked. I was able to solve it though.
I removed the driver that allows the use of the system beep

Simple way to blacklist the PCSPKR (Beep) Module:

Add the line:
blacklist pcspkr

To the end of the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist file.

And you can then use "sudo modprobe pcspkr" command to load it as and when desired.

I'm having the same problem but I'm not sure blacklisting will help for me:

I still want to be notified via audio when i get an email etc, i just don't want the pc speaker to do it! On my laptop (Hardy beta) i get a nice little audio file through my stereo speakers. An install on my desktop (Hardy beta) defaults to using the PC speaker for all sorts of things even though my audio is working fine. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Nick
