Cannot login to yahoo, using ubuntu 11.04 nattynarwhal

Asked by CATTOM

Cannot login to yahoo, using ubuntu 11.04 nattynarwhal OR even earlier with unbuntu10.10 maverickmeerkat, after a long time only sometimes, login took place,is this related with cookies or firewall,i do not understand as I am a newbie . Every time I click to sign in on Yahoo page , the same page opens in a new tab . ThankYou in advance,if somebody helps me.
Earlier I used to use Windows , with so much of virus problems and crashes.
Linux/ubuntu is great , except this problem , i think this is related to the safety & security , which Firefox uses. Somebody told me to install Chromium package to solve this problem, thru synaptic pkg manager but I have not done it .

I do not know how to use command line on the Terminal , or any ubuntu commands. So if anybody can suggest me a solution .

CAT .

Hi! The following will show you how to run firefox in "safe mode". That temporarily runs a brand new firefox user profile with empty caches and no addons and plugins. This is a good way to help narrow down the problem.
First, close all your Firefox windows/Quit it.
Press alt+f2 and a text box will appear in the top left corner of your screen. Type:

firefox -safe-mode

and press ENTER. A "safe mode" window pops up, click "continue in safe mode". If Yahoo loads properly, there was just something wrong with your Firefox profile and we can fix it.

Great! So, to make this fix permanent:

Close firefox, press alt+f2, type

firefox -safe-mode

Press enter. Put a tick in the following boxes:

Disable all add-ons
Reset toolbars and controls
Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults

then click "make changes and restart"

Your bookmarks won't be deleted. If for some reason your problem returns, it's likely because you need to clear your cookies and cache. You can do that in Firefox by clicking the "Tools" menu, then "Clear Recent History", set time range to "Everything", tick every box and press "Clear Now".

A nice new Ubuntu guide is located at https://help.ubuntu.com/11.04/ubuntu-help/index.html
Good Luck!

After doing all that , as suggested by You above and clearing history/everything , the yahoo site /login option is not showing , only yahoo page keeps opening,
the url is :
 https://login.yahoo.com/config/login?.src=fpctx&.intl=in&.pd=c%3D6T7evjap2e6CwWSb86QVdqk-&.done=http%3A%2F%2Fin.yahoo.com%2F

Before this url is " yahoo.com on blue background", i think for secured. On clicking to sign in , the page changes , yahoo , yahoo , help , written on it . Then clicking on Yahoo , gives again , the yahoo page . Maybe I will , try again .

Using that link I am able to sign in, and am then redirected to http://in.yahoo.com/

If it worked in safe mode and does not after permanently resetting Firefox those settings, you may want to make a new Firefox profile. First, you should backup your bookmarks. https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing%20up%20and%20restoring%20bookmarks Please note, "Show all Bookmarks" and the the menus will be at THE TOP OF YOUR SCREEN in Ubuntu

Then close firefox, alt+f2 and type:

firefox -P

(with a CAPITAL P) and Press Enter
Create a new profile, delete your old one and restart Firefox. Then, restore your bookmarks according to the instructions on the Mozilla web page.

Dear Tom Gelinas ,
At last I got the trick , I am using mozilla firefox with ubuntu homepage . I had not done any profile setup on mozilla, only default user was there , so I deleted it . But as suggested by You , when I get stuck up at Yahoo URL, every time , I clear the history/everything from the tool option , the Yahoo login option appears and I am able to log on . This I write after number of trials. So now You can tell the reosen behind this , maybe the cookies.
For me the problem is solved . Tks, again.
Tks, for Your reply to my emails , too .
