Ubuntu installation hangs due to heavy mirror traffic

Asked by Curtis

Essentially, during the installation of Gutsy (redone from the beta and release candidates I was using before), the installation hanged for about 15 minutes during the "configuring apt" stage.

This is most likely due to heavy traffic on the mirror while other users attempted to do the same (probably thousands of other users). I would therefore suggest adding a step to the installation program (Ubiquity): selecting the best mirror.

Ubuntu, through Synaptic, offers a way to configure the software sources to be retrieved from the best mirror based on the user's location. By automatically selecting the best mirror for the user, this would alleviate stress on the main server and would improve installation (as well as future package management) for all users.

The load is automatically distributed across the servers. All of them are being hammered at the moment.

As i see you really don't need help, this is an answer tracker, not a forum, so please use it for what it was designed for, i suggest you to change the status of this "answer" to Solved or delete it because you really don't need help on that subject, it's just a temporal issue.

I totally agree to make a solution for finding the best mirror at installation. I have installed Ubuntu several times (and versions) and the installation always hang on configuring apt (scanning the mirror). This hap;pen every time. I come to 82% installation and "less than 1 min time left" and then the system hangs for maybe 2 hours. This could be avoided if the install did an automatic scan for the fastet mirror, independent of what country I'm in.
