the shutdown function no longer seems to work

Asked by Andrea Summerfield

When I try to shut down the computer it wont switch itself off when I click on shut down. What do I need to do to fix it? The only way I can turn off the computer is to force a shutdown by holding down the on/off button till it switches off.

No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 10.10
Release: 10.10
Codename: maverick
Linux andrea-Satellite-L300 2.6.35-28-generic #50-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar 18 19:00:26 UTC 2011 i686 GNU/Linux

I hope this is what you are looking for! I assumed I was to type this into a terminal screen so that is what I did - if not, could you please let me know what I should have done?

Thanks Andrea

Ok well at least it can. Not sure otherwise, maybe others can advise. I suggest you use the command in the interim as hard powering off can damage components.

Thanks. Here's hoping someone else has come across it too. In the meantime I shall do as you suggest.

Did you run OpenOffice with the quick starter applet enabled from within the software? If so, this is the issue. To fix the problem, you only need disable the Open Office autostart.

The way I did it was to open up Writer, then goto Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > Memory. Uncheck the quickstarter box.
Give it a try... hopefully it will works..

Awesome - thank you!!! Yes the OpenOffice quickstart was enabled. I disabled it and now I can shut down the computer :)

If by any chance you have any suggestions for my other problem with Evolution it would be much appreciated.

Thank you very much everyone for your help

Andrea
