how to get kde on top of ubuntu

Asked by Michael Cunningham

I am using ubuntu 6.06 now and would like to try kubuntu. I understand I can just get the kde interface from ubuntu archives and install it. Please tell me the quickest and eaisiest way to do this. and also, will I be able to switch back and forth from kde to gnome....??
Please be specific, as i know almost nothing, esp about command line stuff.

thanks,

To install kde on top of your ubuntu desktop, please open the terminal and type as follows: sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop, give your user password then confirm downloading the packages. During the install process you will be asked which login manager would you like to use. You have to select either kdm or gdm. When you'd like to switch back to gnome, simply remove the kubuntu-desktop by typing in a console: sudo apt-get remove kubuntu-desktop.

Thanks for your help.
I did as you instructed, and everything seemed to go ok till the end of the kde installation process. terminal showed my user name, computer name and dollar sign, apparently waiting for input. I didn't know what to put there, so, finally I entered "exit", which it promptly did.
I then rebooted and blue kubuntu seemed to indicate it was going to open up with kubuntu, but at the end, it changed back to the ubuntu desktop.
What did I do wrong, or what command shuuld I have entered there.?? Again, pls be specific, as I still know next to nothing.

Thanks again for your help,
Mike C

In the Login screen on first bootup, you will probably notice an Options menu in the bottom-left hand corner of the screen. If you do not see it, press F10. A menu will appear.

From the menu, click "Select Session". You will be presented with a menu of possible session modes; KDE will be one of them. If you select KDE and then log in, you should get a KDE desktop.

To change back to GNOME, select GNOME from the same "Select Session" menu.

Is the same operation possible (switching from gnome to kde) in Ubuntu 6.10 ?
