ubuntu will not detect my 17" laptop montor

I have a toshiba m65-s9092 when installing ubuntu 5.10 the latess release is on order.. it will not detect my 17" wide screen monitor.. xserver will just give up and will not go in at any resolution.. what can i do i really need to run a unix/linux operation system.. i am running solaris 10 at the momrnt it will not see my sound card or wireless card .. ubuntu will but will not detect my monitor.. please help i would reather run ubuntu

What kind of video card do you have? If you're not sure, type "lspci" at the command line.

thanks for getting back to me

my laptop is a toshiba m65 s9092 with a ati mobility x600 se monitor card with a 17 inch wide screen monitor. it seems to detect the card but not the monitor... i hope this is enough information if not please let me know
