non system disk error

I just downloaded ubuntu-6.06 and made a cd on my windows xp. I powered off and tried to boot off the cd with no luck. I have an intel p3 motherboard in a hp 705w provilion pc.
I detatched the hard drive just to get it to boot and Igot a message that it was non system device?

Have you burnt it properly? That is the image and not the .iso file. Take a look at: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto.
