suspend doesn't work when logged in

Asked by Collin Stocks

When I am logged in and I select "Suspend" from the menu, all that happens is that the screen flickers, and the screen becomes locked. When I unlock the screen, a balloon pops up telling me that the suspend was unsuccessful.

I went into help, and it said that a common reason for this is that the current user does not have the necessary rights. However, my main group is admin, and I am also part of the root group.

When I try to Suspend from the login screen, I am able to.

Suspend also doesn't work from any other user accounts.

I am running Ubuntu Feisty on a Dell Inspiron 6000 with an Intel Pentium M processor.

I have found a temporary solution which I am not happy with, because it involves inserting my password every time I want to suspend. I created my own launcher on the panel which launches the following in a terminal:
sudo hibernate -F /etc/hibernate/ram.conf

BTW: I had an earlier problem with hibernating which resolved itself magically. No idea how.

In System --> Administration --> Users and Groups, click your user, click properties, click user privileges and see if any boxes have not been ticked.
