If there is only one user with sudo privileges you're going to find it impossible to add another user, change your password, or switch to root. That's really the point of user security. If the computer is yours I would start from scratch with your own fresh copy of Ubuntu. If you can't log into the computer at all, you'll probably have to download and burn an Ubuntu CD on another computer in order to do this.

You do NOT need to reinstall Ubuntu to gain access!

First, I'll echo Ian's sentiment about how you should only attempt to circumvent the restrictions on your user account if the computer is yours or you have permission from the person whose computer it is.

You can change your friend's account password and sign in to his account (and then use that to perform administrative tasks, or just use it to give yourself administrative privileges):
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword

Alternatively, you could keep your friend's account password the same and use a modified version of that procedure to simply give your account administrative privileges. To do this, instead of running "password username", run "usermod -a -G admin username" (replacing username with the short name of your user account, as explained on that page).
