Issue with ndiswrapper in gutsy

Asked by NoahW

In Feisty my wireless worked fine, but when I upgraded to gutsy, my computer couldn't find any access points. I'm using ndiswrapper 1.49rc2 (I've also tried 1.48) I actually managed to get it working, but suddenly it stopped and now I'm back where I started. Here are the steps I took to get it fixed:
1. I figured out my original problem was one with an alternate driver, so I edited /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist to eliminate the driver.
2. After that, I had dns problems, which I fixed by turning off ipv6

It worked fine for a while, but now my computer can't find any access points again so I'm back where I started!

Can you tell us more about your hardware? I have ndiswrapper working on my Dell Inspiron 6400 with a Broadcom 1390 mini-PCI card. (However, for some reason I need to do a sudo modprobe ndiswrapper every time I power up. I don't know why yet.

I'm using a custom-built computer with a wireless card I installed myself - a TrendNet TEW-421PI. My wireless is working now, but last night I restarted my computer and it wasn't.

BTW, to fix your ndiswrapper problem edit '/etc/modules' and add a line at the bottom that says 'ndiswrapper'. This will make your computer automatically load ndiswrapper at startup.

Thanks for your response. The odd thing is that I don't believe I had to add the module when I installed Feisty, but I may have done it some other way. Maybe the latest version of the package doesn't add it and the old one did.

Just out of interest: Can you tell if the wireless card is activated? My computer has a light that shows when wireless is turned on. Does it respond when you do a sudo modprobe ndiswrapper?

Have you tried an older version of the driver for the chipset in the trendnet card? One thing you might do is download, compile and build the latest version of ndiswrapper. (i.e. from http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/ not the ubuntu repositories).

Can you help with this problem?
