Video Apps Crashing

Asked by Daire Conley

I've reinstalled Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit PC desktop edition and I'm still having issues with certain video playing programs. For example: Boxee is a 3rd party program which was working two weeks ago or so. Now suddenly its not working even after a fresh install. The program loads and appears to work fine until I select a video to play. Once I select a video stream and click on a video the program crashes. Its as if Ubuntu is locking it down. There's no screen freezing or anything like that. It just shuts down completely as if it were never on. Its as if a person is running a "force quit" on the program. Does Ubuntu override certain programs as a security feature? Is Ubuntu detecting the video stream as a threat? I did just recently switch routers as well; however, the router I installed on the network did not require installing any software to operate. Is there a security setting in Ubuntu to enable streaming video with certain applications? The streaming video on the video hosting sites is functioning...however the video in the Boxee program is causing it to shut off. It makes a skipping sound and then the screen closes without me actually doing a force quit.

You mention 'Video Apps' but you only talk about 'Boxee'.

Can we assume you mean 'Boxee' not ALL VIDEO APPS?

If that assumption is false can you provide more details about your errors, like the errors themselves.

cheers.

If you do not know where Boxee logs its errors I suggest you refer to Boxee's support site.
