Can't get Ubuntu to boot.

Asked by Jesselee34

I booted from the ubuntu cd that I just made, and the first screen came up. I tried the install option and it just wen't to a black screen and didn't do anything. So I restarted and chose the second option. And then intalled from liveCD. Thought every thing was working untill It finished and restarted. After i choose to boot Ubuntu nothing happens just a black screen and then my monitor turns of. I read some other posts and it seems it may be my processor. I have an intell pentiumD. Also some said they were having a similar problem because they had nvidia 5600. I have the geforce 8800 gts. I really want to get away from ms, please help.

I experienced something similar with my p4p800/p4-3GHz/Geforce5200 and fixed it with the following info

"You need to use F6 at the boot screen to add these command line options: noapic nolapic irqpoll"

from:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Asus_P4P800

please try these options and document if it worked to help others...

I forgot to mention that you can add these options (assuming they work) permanently by

sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

add the options in the options section (there will be "splash" and "quiet" on that line)
save and close your editor then

sudo update-grub

and reboot

Sorry, I'm a noob. When the command line came up I just typed in noapic nolapic irqpoll. Is that what I am supposed to do?

Got it to work. I just typed in noapic nolapic irqpoll after I pressed F6. Now I have to get my Nvidia 8800gts driver installed. Wish me luck.
