Installing a Wireless Usb adapter (Sweex 140 Nitro XM).

Asked by Leo_the_one

This is the first day I am using Ubuntu (Feisty Fawn), after formatting my hard drive and partitioning it to install Windows XP Home Edition on the first partition and Ubuntu on the other (making a swap, and a share partition). Everything is working fine, apart from the fact that I can not access the Internet. I am using a wireless USB network adapter that supports both 802.11g and 802.11b, specifically a Sweex 140 Nitro XM. I went to System -> Networking but the adapter did not even show up. Please help me.

According to the ndiswrapper wiki, "works with ndiswrapper 1.21, kernel 2.6.17 and Linuxant 16k stack patch. Before installing the .inf and .sys into ndiswrapper, you must remove the space before WLAN_USB2.XP.NT (line 90) and COMMON_NDIS_REG_NT (line 330) in file WlanUIG.INF."

I've downloaded and modified the drivers for you. They can be found here (and will only be available for 48 hours):
http://eagleswingscoop.org/WlanUIG.inf

If Firefox opens it instead of downloading it, go to File -> Save Page As...

Now, there is one thing you should know and may already have noticed. These drivers may or may not work depending on whether or not ndiswrapper has fixed the 16K stack bug. I guess back in 2005 you had to use a patch to make your stack 16K in size. I can't and don't need to explain why or what it is, but it may keep you from getting these drivers working. If it does, you'll want to apply the "Linuxant 16k stack patch", which is beyond me unfortunately.

If you think your drivers aren't working, be sure to grab a copy of /var/log/syslog 30 seconds after you plug in the device.

If you aren't sure how to install drivers or use ndiswrapper, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/Ndiswrapper

Thank you very much for you lightning-quick answer. I downloaded and installed the modified drivers, and the article on Ndiswrapper was extremely helpful. I can now succesfully connect to the Internet and to the home network. Thanks a ton again!
