email connection not found - internet ok.

Asked by Kristin

I have Ubuntu 606 with a DSL internet connection which is working fine with Firefox, after I disabled IPv6, but, even though I have configured Evolution correctly, it will not see the server.
I have also downloaded Thunderbird and tried that with the same result.
Is there some setting I am missing, like the IPv6?
Also when I go into networking tools, the network device shows up as 'loopback interface (lo)' and when I try to change it to 'Ethernet interface (eth0)' it always returns to loopback, even though the ethernet interface is active and open.

Help.

Kristin.

Does your provider requires ipv6?

No, my ISP does not require IPv6, as web browsing works OK without.
Before I disabled IPv6 pages were takinf 5min + to load.

Are you having problems sending or receiving mail, or both? There are separate servers for sending and receiving.

Some things to check again:

 * Make sure your mail servers actually exist on the Internet. In a Terminal window, type "mtr your.mailserver.com" (no quotes). If you get the message "Name or service not known: No such file or directory", then your.mailserver.com does not exist. If you get a data display, the server is present and you have the address right - press q. Do this for both your sending and receiving mail servers.

 * Verify the addresses of both the sending and receiving servers (smtp.isp.com, mail.isp.com, etc) are entered correctly in Evolution.

 * Verify that you have set the correct type of receiving server in Evolution. If you select IMAP and your provider offers only POP3, your connection will fail (and vice versa)

 * Make sure that your encryption settings are correct in Evolution. If your provider does not provide SSL or TLS, and you select one of those options, your connection will fail. You should check this for both sending and receiving servers.

 * Make sure you are entering your password correctly, and that you've chosen a supported authentication method.

Good luck.

Sorry,
I hit the wrong key.
I tried all of the above.
Yes, my server is present, but I still cannot get through on Evolution. I am now getting an error message saying 'no route to host'
As I said earlier, my internet is working fine; just the email not getting through.
Kristin,

I think that maybe I need to know if you can disable IPv6 in evolution, like you do in Firefox?

Well, let's see if ipv6 is actually the problem first. It shouldn't be, unless you've messed with your system configuration and have prioritized ipv6 over ipv4.

Open a terminal window, and type "dig mail.yourserver.com" (no quotes, and replace mail.yourserver.com with the name of your ISP's mail server)

Do this for both the sending and receiving mail servers, and paste the output here so I can see it.

Just so you know, "no route to host" can mean that you typed a server name wrong, or a server is down.

Can you help with this problem?
