Keyring doesn't work over SSH? dbus not forwarded?

Asked by Endolith

I've been running Rhythmbox remotely over ssh -X so that I can have the full experience of running the program on my laptop while having the sound come out of my desktop's sound card. But it can't access the keyring that way, so every time it tries to access files on my laptop to play them, it asks for my password. Is there a way to give it access to the desktop's keyring?

I see an error like this:

** (rhythmbox:7035): WARNING **: couldn't communicate with gnome keyring daemon via dbus: The name org.gnome.keyring was not provided by any .service files

Someone else asked on Ubuntu Forums "Does anyone know if dbus works with ssh-X-forwarded apps?" I suspect these are related.

boutil from ubuntu forums says

export `dbus-launch`

might fix the problem. More details on this would be helpful.

"D-Bus is an inter-process communication mechanism—a medium for local communication between processes running on the same host. (Inter-host connects may be added in the future, but that is not what D-Bus is meant for)."

Dear Endolith,

There are applications for this kind of purpose. Perhaps ones with web interfaces.

Many blessings.

Just trying to see if I can help answer and close some old questions. Have you tried to Rhythmweb? its a web interface to remotely control rhythmbox http://web.vee.net/projects/rhythmweb/. If that doesn't help, you might also want to just enable the DAAP Music Sharing Plugin in Rhythmbox and you can easily access and play your songs from anywhere in your network.

I'm also just trying to close some old questions. Do you still have this issue, or have you tried eddie-no's suggestions?

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Endolith for more information if necessary.
