Is there a system-wide sound equalizer in Ubuntu?

Asked by Marcus Granado

I'm wondering if there's a system-wide sound equalizer in Ubuntu.

The ones available, e.g. in Amarok, are restricted to the application's sound output only. Having a system-wide wound equalizer would facilitate enormously for instance if I changed my sound profile from laptop to headphone or to my home sound system, or if I just wanted to boost the frequencies around 300hz and dampen those around 15khz. Alsa's ladspa plugin framework provides raw programming support for an equalizer, but I can't find any Ubuntu-provided equalizer plugin for it, let alone a simple-to-use GUI. Is there one?

If not, may I suggest you to provide one? Which project in Ubuntu would be responsible for this implementation? A system-wide equalizer seems to be a recurrent request, see e.g. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=483331

You can check out pulseaudio (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio) for a potential solution.

This forumthread explains how you can use pulseaudio. It sets up an equalizer that you may configure by a configfile. So no nice GUI.

For a graphic 15-bands system-wide equalizer for Ubuntu working with pulseaudio see:

This is not a highly professional one but it does the job until experts provide us with a built-in one.

Thanx and kudos to those who offeedr their advice/help. I do plan to install the 'pulseaudio" graphic equalizer. However, I inadvertently sovled my problem....somewhat. I installed and upgraded VLC mediaplayer and it has a built-in equalizer. It's not the greatest, but will get me through, for right now. I had the pulseaudio equalizer before I wiped my drive and installed 12.04. It was exactly what I wanted.

Can you help with this problem?
