Dell Inspiron 1525 Wireless Card - driver problem

Asked by GinjaNinja32

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on my Dell Inspiron 1525, but the wireless card does not work in Ubuntu. I have tried ndiswrapper, installing Windows Vista drivers copied from another partition, and I have downloaded the proprietary drivers (making sure to remove the old driver first). The proprietary drivers worked for a while, but seemed to be deleted on shutdown, but now the drivers won't even install.

Hi,

Please first connect your wired network adapter to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word lsmod. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|usb|witch|wl'; iwconfig; cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|witch|wl'; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; cat /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state; sudo lsmod

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.

Step 4: Please also clarify if you installed Ubuntu to the harddisk and are running from a harddisk install OR if you are only testing Ubuntu in a LiveCD session.

Regards,

Mark

Our certification records show that the wireless was working on this machine (including all updates) with no need for ndiswrapper IF your machine has the following card:

Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection (rev 02)

Running the command recommended by Mark above will provide this info - so *please* do so if you want help.

Sorry if its a bit long, i dont know which bit you need.

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 from a partition on my laptop's internal HDD (Windows Vista on the other, but broken)

I don't have that card, Brendan, its a Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01)

Hi,

Have you tried 10.04 LTS? Does it offer you any drivers to install after the installation? Our records show that there are lots of systems on which your card works fine with 10.10 (http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/catalog/model/pci:4315:14E4-NETWORK) so not too sure what is going on here.

OK, so the output posted by Bp-1996 shows this:

Setting up firmware-b43-installer (4.150.10.5-4) ...
Not supported low-power chip with PCI id 14e4:4315!
Aborting.

It would appear that, if you have a low-power version of the chip, the driver offered by the driver installation tool doesn't work at all. This is a bug reported in Launchpad (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/maverick/+source/jockey/+bug/655111) and fixed in recent versions of Jockey (the driver installation tool).

I suggest you try the following procedure:

1- Use jockey to uninstall all versions of the wireless driver you might have
2- install the latest updates (from system -> update manager), this will hopefully bring Jockey up to the correct version (it was fixed in 0.5.10-0ubuntu5.1, I'm running Maverick with latest updates and I'm up to 0.5.10-0ubuntu5.2).
3- Run System -> Administration -> Additional Drivers again, and select the B43 driver.

If this still doesn't work, the bug discussion suggests removing the B43 driver altogether and using the STA driver instead. For this:

1- Open a terminal (as instructed by Mark, on the first comment here).
2- Paste this command
sudo apt-get remove --purge firmware-b43-installer
  and press Enter
3- Run System -> Administration -> Additional Drivers again, and use the STA driver instead.

If you're comfortable with the command line, another possibility is to install the low-power driver manually:
sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-lpphy-installer

Please let us know if this works; if any of the instructions are unclear, you have questions or are unable to follow them, don't hesitate to ask for clarification. Also, if none of these procedures work, please rerun the command Mark gave you in the first comment, and post the output again, as it is useful in determining what's happening. Don't worry about it being too long, it's normal in this case.

Regards,
- Daniel Manrique

Jockey is up to date already (0.5.10-0ubuntu5.2)

The driver for the low-power chip does the same as the STA driver - removes the wireless networking section from the network menu (rather than saying "firmware missing")

Terminal output from the command is below again

I intend to backup all old files on my hard drive and install a clean install of 11.04 when it is released, but the problem could reappear in 11.04, so if we can work out how to fix it, it will be good.

Please run the following command:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Using the gedit editor, please ADD the following configuration line into the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file:

blacklist ndiswrapper

SAVE the change to the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file.

Then run the following commands using a WIRED Internet connection:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get remove --purge firmware-b43-installer

sudo apt-get remove --purge firmware-b43-lpphy-installer

sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source

sudo apt-get install wicd

Then REBOOT and RETEST wireless using wicd instead of the default Network Manager.

Make sure to first test wireless WITHOUT encryption enabled and then with WPA2 encryption enabled.

Wicd can't find any wireless neworks, and I have made sure the wifi switch is on.

and the wired connection is now disconnected on startup and wicd says "connected", so i have to disconnect and reconnect

I worked out the non-installing driver problem!

The battery in my laptop wasn't charging, so I booted to the previous kernel, the battery charged, and the drivers installed.

No idea if they still delete themselves, but will post again if they are, otherwise will mark as solved.

Just rebooted computer, drivers are still deleting on shutdown or startup (but hibernate works fine).

This worked for me. Downgrading the bcmwl-kernel-source: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcmwl/+bug/732677/comments/23
